The genus Salvia is wide spread both geographically and in appearance. The plants range from small compact annuals to large sprawling shrubs. The colours vary from pure white to near black. Unlike many other genera blue flowers are quite common and come in a variety of shades.
Salvia guaranitica ‘Black and Blue’ is a relatively large shrub with deep blue flowers held in black bracts. The leaves are ovate, slightly hairy and clean green. The plant is semi deciduous in colder climates, likes a partly shaded to full sun position and responds well to summer watering. An annual prune and a good feed in late summer will keep the plant healthy and vigorous.
Salvia are closely related to Lavandula and Rosmarinus and as such work well together in the garden. ‘Black and Blue’ is another in the range of salvias selected by Larkman Nurseries as attractive garden plants. In good conditions it will attain a height of 1.2-1.4 m with the deep blue flowers occurring between December and May.
