There are more than 900 species of Salvia, mostly from Southern USA, Central and South America. Salvia greggii is a popular, evergreen shrub growing in the rocky soils of Texas and Mexico. It is normally a red flowered variety but there are numerous other colors from cream to purple.
‘Lara’ prefers full sun and well drained soil and is tolerant of moderate frosts. Growing 100cm tall x 70cm wide, it produces dainty pink and white flowers from late spring to late autumn, it has soft lime green leaves and is an easy to grow plant. It performs best with an annual feed of Osmocote Slow Release after flowering and should be pruned in late spring early summer to maintain a compact and bushy shape. Salvia greggii ‘Lara’ makes an attractive border plant, does well in a mass planting or can be a specimen plant in a cottage or perennial garden. It looks good blended with other Salvia, Lavandula, Penstemon and Tricyrtus.
