This delightful genus of colorful perennials from Asia will thrive in most gardens. ‘Empress’ is a hybrid from Tricyrtis formosana and T.hirta It is a strong growing plant with masses of orchid like flowers at the tips of the stems.
‘Empress’ has masses of flowers in late summer and autumn and requires a moist but well drained soil in part to filtered sun. They like a humus rich soil and are hardy to most frosts. In cooler areas they will need a warm spot to get the best from the flowers. They are easy to grow and will delight even the most brown thumbed gardener.
‘Empress’ is a new introduction from the American nurserymen, Dan Heims. It has been selected for the large flowers and it looks great planted with Heuchera ‘Amber Waves’ or Heucherella ‘Dayglow Pink’. Plant under deciduous trees or in a shady spot along with some variegated Hostas.
