There are more than 900 species of Salvia and this large summer/autumn flowering hybrid is an attractive plant for the middle or back of the garden bed. It is thought to be from the hybrid S. guaranitica x S. gesneriiflora. It is hardy to moderate frosts and responds well to a 30% prune in mid spring. Feed regularly with Seasol and Powerfeed from early sping to late autumn.
The flowers are a dark purple with almost black calyces that add a bright splash of color to the garden. It is an attractive large shrub that is tolerant to extended dry periods but responds well to summer moisture. Plant with other large Salvia like ‘Bethelli’, ‘Pink Icicles’ or ‘Tequila’ or as a back drop to a bed of Penstemon and Hydrangea.
