‘Port Wine’ is a tall and elegant shrub with masses of large red to purple flowers in late summer and autumn.  The shrub grows to approximately 100 cm in height and 80cm in width.  Penstemon ‘Port Wine’ prefers moist but well drained soil and an open sunny position.  It will tolerate moderate frosts and some shade.  Regular applicatiosn of Seasol and PowerFeed and a  medium prune after flowering will keep the plant compact and healthy.

Penstemons are a great addition to any garden.  They can be used as a specimen plant, tub plant,  en masse for an eye catching effect or even as a low hedge.  They look good interplanted with spring flowering perennials like Lavandula ‘Hazel’, and Felicia ‘Pink Star’ or with colorful foliage plants like Heuchera Plum Pudding’.
