Ajuga reptans or ‘Bugle Flowers’ are extra hardy and form carpets of color in spring and early summer when their closely packed flowers appear. The foliage forms a tight weed supressing mat. ‘Burgundy Glow’ is an eye-catching form with grey green and white old leaves and rich purple new growth. The blue flowers grow to 5cm long and are held above the leaves.
One plant will attain a spread of one square metre after two to three years, and a height, without flowers, of usually less than 10 cm. Ajuga ‘Burgundy Glow’ likes moist, but not wet soil and will grow in shade to full sun. It likes a feed Osmocote Outdoor Trees and Shrubs in spring and autumn. In the garden ‘Burgundy Glow’ makes an attractive companion to plants like Sedum ‘Vera Jamison’, Heuchera ‘Purple Petticoats’ or Tricyrtis ‘Empress’. It also works well under Hebe ‘Caledonia’ and Salvia ‘Black Knight’.
